Making timing pulleys

After much disappointment in dealing with a retailer I have decided to make my own pulleys. I'm going with 3:1 & 1:1 starting with a 1.5" pulley and next pulley 3" approximate depending on # of teeth. Unless any of you say different I think I'll go with XL .080 pitch. I either need to find a calculator for making these or someone to help me figure out # of teeth, dia. and any other specs I may need. I'm finding out I'm dumber than I realized

0.080 looks like MXL... and that seems too small to me. XL might be ok, that is 0.200 pitch. I am using L on my mill, and it would probably be overkill for the plasma cutter (this is for that project right?). If you have a copy of the Machinery Handbook, there is a table in there with standard pulley sizes, as well as information about tooth geometry.

From the table, looks like in XL, the closest size to a 1.5" pulley is 24teeth (1.508" od), and for 3" it's 48 teeth (3.036" od). For MXL that would be 60teeth for 1.5" (actually 1.508), and there is no standard size for MXL in 3" diameter, but you can figure it would be about 120teeth.

The hardest part is likely going to be making the cutter. I would buy a belt before you start to test for fit.

I have a couple 18 tooth XL pulleys that I grabbed at the local surplus store (cause you can always use em). Yours if you want em.

Thanks for the info & the offer (I'd gladly re em-burst you for both the pulleys & shipping) I have on hand this belt and could do the gantry pulleys in this size "L" http://www.amazon.com/Goodyear-Engineered-Products-Positive-Trapezoidal/dp/B00006U0QO. I'll Pm you my shipping address and you can let me know how much to send you, if they are 1/2" or drillable to 1/2" I can use them for my Z axis. I guess I need to break down and buy a copy of Machinery Handbook.
