I have been a pipe smoker for about seven years now. Went to the pipe to get away from the cigarettes. Pipes fascinate me,there are literally thousands of styles and shapes made from a variety of materials. Surfing the net I found websites of several pro pipe makes and forums devoted to pipes and pipe making. Decided I wanted to try my hand at making a few.
I have a small shop set up in our basement, have to share the room with the washer and dryer. Have been slowly equipping it as my budget allows, I am retired and on the old fixed income.
The main machine tool used in pipe making is the lathe. Both wood and metal lathes can be used, some guys have both in their shop. The metal lathe is probably the most useful as it can be used for working the bowls and stems and other parts. I have posted some pictures of some of the pipes I've made and my shop in my gallery if you'd like to take a look.

Thanks Dave! I could that that, might take a while to get pics of steps involved assembled and uploaded.

Hi - still new to the forum but stumbled across this thread. Thought you might be interested to see this site: http://pfeifen-holzkunst-oberasbach.de/index.php?id=10 - a friend of mine from Germany who makes beautiful pipes - also cutting blocks, stringed instruments.

I met him by chance when we were staying at the same place in Italy - and it turned out he had the exact same lathe and mill that I did at the time. Small world.

Cheers
