Magnetic tape and mounting surface for DRO

I picked up some DMR200 read heads, magnetic tape and the SS protective tape for a DRO. Two questions.
1. Will the material the magnetic tape is mounted to have any effect on the read head?
2. The SS protective tape should be applied directly to the surface the magnetic tape, correct?

No, can be iron or aluminum, no difference

2. The SS protective tape should be applied directly to the surface the magnetic tape, correct?

Yes.
