Magnetic Chuck on a Shaper?

Try It and tell us how that works.... I would never try that, Magnetic chucks are really only for grinding machines... Yes, You are insane...

I have used a magnetic chuck on my mill. You do have to block in the material with additional steel, but it does work. Don't see why it wouldn't work on a shaper, just don't get too greedy with the cut.

Not a good idea. I have used one on a mill when taking skim cuts of less than .002, but even then it required extra blocking On a surface grinder an .005 cut is considered a heavy cut. A finish cut is usually .0002 or less. Taking cuts in the .0002 to .002 range on a shaper is not practical. At that rate it would take weeks to make a single part.

I don’t think it would work to good. To much friction on the cut would just push pull the part off the chuck. Like projectnut said your usually only taking a thou or so off on a grinder and forces are a little different than a shaper.

If you put a securely attached fence on the chuck so that the cut pushed the part into the fence it might work. I'd try it with short stock first and work my way up in cut depth. And stand way back and wear some safety gear during the cuts.

Thats pretty much what i was going to suggest.......and I would add to this suggestion by saying that I would make sure the fence height is at least slightly over the half way point on the part you will attempt to "shape" to help keep the part from tipping over the fence. I dont know how much of a difference this will make but i wouldn't think it wouldn't hurt.

The question is why would you be leaning toward a mag chuck for a shaper. Why not just use the typical vise with the shaper?
