Sometimes a situation arises where a standard three jaw chuck key isn't long enough, making it tedious to use, There are some extended chuck keys out there, but lots of luck finding one if you need an odd-ball size square end.
In my case I needed an extended key with a 19/32" square end, and finding one was impossible. I ended up buying a short key of the right size for $8.97 and free Amazon Prime shipping.
First, I ground down one end of the t-handle so I could remove it from the key. Then I found a piece of scrap 3/4" round bar, and cut it off to 7" in length. I drilled a letter "P" sized hole in one end to accommodate the t-handle. I beveled the mating ends of the original key and the round bar, and welded them together. Then, I inserted the 5/16" t-handle, welded a 3/8" nut to each end, and rounded off the nuts on my belt sander.
A stupidly simple fix, but I thought I would share it anyway.
