I've been running my S&B 1024 with out a dedicated task light (kept a flash light handy). An opportunity came my way - complete lamp with a burnt out transformer (120vx12v). I was not able to find a replacement, with adequate current capability that would still fit in the base of the lamp. I considered remote mounting the transformer. The solution I went with was a small "Electronic Transformer" for halogen accent lighting. The price, with postage, was a little cheaper for the electronic transformer as for an over size conventional transformer that would need to be remote mounted. The power supply fit nicely in the base and the conventional H3 halogen bulb works great.
Also, completed a somewhat over engineered mounting bracket that keys into the accessory mount along the back of the bed.
I am interested in the conversion to LEDs - described by Mark mksj, and perhaps others.

Right now the lighting is much improved, so I'll just enjoy it the way it is.
