I have recently bought a Sheldon lathe serial no. 871 with EW preceding it.The spindle face gear is missing teeth. The part no. i found was KB443.Could anyone assist me by telling me where i might find a used or new gear and the proper manual i need to change it.I plan on keeping it as it seems like a well made lathe. Thank you. Appreciate any assistance you can give me.

Larry,

You will really want to go over to the "sheldonlathe" yahoo web site, there is a guy over there that was an engineer at Sheldon for umpty years - was even there when Sheldon closed. And of course, there are many more very knowledgeable folks...

Also go to Tonys lathes and look under the Sheldon section...

I have a Sheldon M series and am quite familiar with it but am not sure which one you have - a 10"?? The spindle gear on mine is hardened and would imagine yours is also - hard to imagine shucking teeth on it! The idler gear should have peeled before it.

On mine the gear is a slide on fit with a woodruff key holding it - which should have gave way also before teeth - held on with a threaded 'nut' that is round with hole/s for a spanner wrench (which nobody ever has and uses a punch) There is a allen head set screw in the nut pressing on a small piece of brass that presses against the threads (to prevent marring the threads - watch for these through out the spindle and gear box). You probably will have to loosen the banjo gear train and allow it to drop a bit for clearance, then removing the nut should allow the gear to just slide off.
