Looking For a New Saw

As many of you know I purchased a 14" Delta radial arm saw about a year ago. It was at the family cottage completing projects until a month ago. It's a great saw but took up far too much room in the garage. I finally brought it home and set it up in the shop.

It's nice to have the space back in the garage at the cottage, but there are still a number of projects pending that would be much easier if I had a power saw on hand. To that end I'm considering a compound miter saw. They're just about as versatile as the radial arm saw, but only take up 1/10 of the room.

After considerable research I'm leaning towards the Dewalt model DWS780. It's a 12" double bevel sliding compound miter saw. They're currently on sale at Home Depot for $549.00 which is $100.00 off their normal list price.

Does anyone have experience with this particular saw, and if so, would you recommend it?

I am also considering one of their stands. They currently offer 2 models that interest me. One is the DCD 796. It's a wheeled stand capable of holding 300 lbs.

The other is a stationary stand model DWX724, with a capacity of 500 lbs. They both have a list price of $229.00

In this case I'm leaning toward the stationary stand. The plan would be to use it either in the garage on the cement floor, or on the deck with a wood floor.

A couple years back I bought a Kobalt like the Dewalt . Used it with no issues so far . I have 2 radial arm saws that I haven't used in years taking up space still .

I was using this very saw to build a workbench over the weekend.

I borrowed it from work but if I had to buy one it would be on the short list.

I’m sure you’ll get comments from folks that really use all the features but I don’t have any complaints.

It will find your weak breakers though, fortunately my panel is right next to where I was working.

I had that saw for years and used it commercially for quite a few of those. Never had a problem, and worth every penny. I only got rid of it because I hadn't used it in a long time and wanted the money for something else. My toxic trait is that I hate clutter and will sell something I haven't used, only to buy it again a couple years later. lol.

A near new 12” DeWalt compound saw came along with a shop full of machines and tools that I purchased a few years back. I'm sure most will agree it's a great saw. But I decided to actually give it away to a fella that helped me with rebuilding my garage shop three years ago. I rely on my Craftsman 10” straight miter saw. Along with my Craftsman 10” radial arm that I've had for nearly 60 years. I've worked around all kinds of power equipment. And always felt intimidated by the Dewalt and kept the tried and true old Craftsman 10"..

I'm sure I'm but a few that stick by a radial today.

I looked at the Dewalt and ended up with a 12” Metabo HPT (Hitachi). It was on sale for around $200 less than the Dewalt and I like that the guide rods are out front so that I don’t need to have the clearance behind the saw for them. The stand is the Masterforce brand from Menards.
