Logan 1935-2 lathe

Well another small set back. In a couple of posts back is a diagram of the cabinet drive assembly. Part number 35 had a major modification by a previous owner. They broke it of or otherwise damaged it so the welded a allen head bolt to it. Upper rod is right hand threads, lowered threads are left hand threads. Make a simple adjustment of the belt tension easy. I have a new part coming from Logan. Hopefully this is the last PITA modification done to this lathe. Mike

The belts Logan sent me were A 48. I'm going to try a set of A50 or A 49. What belt numbers are you running?

I had one original spindel belt left so I cut into it and took it over to Napa auto parts. They measured it and came to the conclusion that I really need 2 A 47 belts. Those will show up Tuesday morning.

What a ride! But you are going to have a very nice machine you know inside and out. Sorry to hear about the kitty. And your finger. Good information on the tee slot cross slide. FWIW another advantage to the tee slot is the ability to mount a rear cut off tool. I've read lots of posts of users very happy with having the tee slots and when there is the rare need for the compound, swap it out as others have described.

Apron is now complete and painted. I baked the front and rear sections for 2 hrs in the oven at 170 f. Should work perfectly I hope. I sealed the mating surface with an oil resistant gasket maker. Hopefully when I add oil I have no leaks.

I tore the headstock apart to get the new belts on. What a job. It has taken me at least 2 hrs just getting through installing the back gear and getting it adjusted correctly. What a PITA. Set up of the back gear is critical as it will not work correctly unless it's placed with just enough clearance to work. The end bushing caps can't be tight up against the gear as if it is your not going to be able to move it. Tomorrow I'll do the final install of the spindel. Then add all the bits and pieces like top cover, gear box cover etc all. If your Logan lathe is a similar model and your contemplating rebuilding it to save time and frustration take some measurements for the back gear placement. My lathe had been rebuild sometime in the past, those backgear bushing caps need to go in as shown in the drawing. Needless to say mine were installed on the wrong ends, by a Buuba with a 5 lb hammer to drive it together. I had to use a brake cylinder hone to clean up these lower bores. Now they fit with a small amount of force, thumb pressure almost. These are set in place with set screws. Don't forget to add oild to the backgear as once the spindel is in place your not oiling it. Hope these comments help someone else.
Mike

All belts are on now except the belt to the motor. Headstock bolted down.
Now working on transmission. Decreased it yesterday. And then today sand blasted the main transmission housing and the 2 gear selector Handel's. 2 coats 5 minutes apart then baked in oven at 170f for 2 hrs. Gives a nice hard finish. I wish now that I would have baked the headstock
Tomorrow I'll call Logan and get my 2 last parts ordered. If anyone needs transmission parts please pm me. I have a complete spreadsheet transmission minus one gear, plus the 3 shafts need replacement and bushings.

Transmission work. I have 2 new shafts coming but still need to order one more. I don't trust my old worn out one. May as well do it right the first time. Also I'm including a picture of the Transmission gear clusters. The Logan diagram is ok but short on details and these pictures helped me.
I now have 3 new bushings installed.

Work slow down due to UPS & USPS. My parts were shipped like 2 weeks ago. UPS transfered my order to the USPS . Needless to say they seem to be LOST!
I have a transmission question. On the shifter levers parts 1203 and 1204 where they fit on the shaft I have 0.0010 of play with thevnew shaft. I'm calling Logan tomorrow to see what the inside diameter is on new levers. To me that's too much slop for rotating parts. I realize that some clearance is needed but how much is too much?
Thanks
Mike
