I found the subject of the Liberty Tool Co. located in Liberty Maine on one of the other forums. It brings back good memories of the time I spent in the area in recent past years. I spent a number of great weekends roaming the Maine sea coast area and Liberty Tool was always on my list of must do if possible. I scored a number of great tools at a reasonable cost at the store. I highly recommend anyone that likes tools and is visiting the area put Liberty Tool Co. on your to-do list. Allow plenty of time, the store is a basement and two floors full of tools and stuff.

Here is link to a video about the store and founder: http://vimeo.com/31575162

And while you are in Liberty, across the street from the tool store is: http://www.davistownmuseum.org/

Disclaimer:
I am in no way connected with the Liberty Tool Co. or the town of Liberty, just a satisfied customer and previous visitor.

Re: Tool organization

I don’t recall the tools being that organized. The pictures were probably poised. I once asked about the organization and the guy told me they tried but with customers gathering things and then changing their minds and just putting things down in other parts of the store you never knew exactly where to find things. It was like a treasure hunt.

I wish we had something like that down here. I have to go to Pa. to flea markets to see much, and Ebay seems to have robbed off most of the stuff I used to be able to buy.

I noticed when looking for the links to the Liberty Tool Co. store that they too have started using Ebay and their prices reflect the added fees and associated inflated prices. We don't have any thing like that near Nashville either. When I moved back to Tennessee I had withdrawal pains from not having the many tool treasure spots I had found in the north east area.

OT - I love your work and posted pictures. You are a true craftsman.

Oh man, I'd love to visit that place. I love classic hardware stores. Like everywhere else in the US, we used to have a bunch in town but they're pretty much all extinct now thanks to the big box stores. We lost a local auto parts store recently and it sucks. I hate going to the big stores so I visit an independent store a town over. I have to drive at least 10mins now but you get service, unlike at most big stores.

I have the great fortune of living about 15 minutes from them. I go there A LOT. always something new, I never leave empty handed. I was there today and walked out with several brand new hss end mills in their plastic case for $1.50 each, an oiler for $3 and an old 10 drawer wood toolbox for $100.

the owner was there "restocking" the store, by which I mean he had several very large boxes of tools, and he would stand in a central spot and was tossing th wrenches towards the area they usually lie in, sometimes he made it, sometimes they landed on the floor, you learn to look behind and under everything there. of course he also had to pause while someone started pawing thru the box he was bringing in to get first dibs. not me, of course, I would NEVER do that.

and you get exactly what you need instead of the runaround or the deer in the headlights look when you get technical.
