Hey all,
Lathe is an Atrump 1340.
So my used 8" Atlas four jaw decided yesterday that one of the jaws felt it would be happier flying across the shop. Luckily I wasn't in the way and neither was the lathe. Upon forensic investigation the two fingers that hold the jaw screw in place broke, allowing the jaw and jaw screw to depart from the chuck body. Thankfully I was only running 125 rpm.
Naturally no parts are available so I decided to look for another chuck.
I found a 10" Pratt Burnerd for a great price ($200.00)and pulled the trigger on it.
Now here is my concern: I know the PB is a superior chuck the the Atlas I have now. However the Atlas weighs in around 35# while the PB tips the scale about 60#.
Is that extra weight going to have any detrimental effects on my spindle bearings?
Anything I should be double checking?
Mounting system is D1-4, direct with no backplate needed.

Just knock off 25# from the 5-600 lb capacity when you want to spin something that size.

I wouldn't give it another thought.

Rpm's above 800/1000 I would be very careful.

I hardly spin more than 300. Rifle barrels don't take much spinning.
An interesting point, I was discussing this with a buddy and he felt the extra heft would be beneficial, resulting in less vibration, chatter and better surface finish.

He is correct, the extra mass will damp vibration better. If you have a clutch or brake (not familiar with your machine), the still should be fine. I did look on the 'Net at a KL1340, and it has a D1-4, and comes optional with an 8" 4 jaw. RPM range on that one is up to 2,000. Naturally, if you had something near 8" chucked, that would never be used, but as long as the chuck is reasonably balanced, I wouldn't be concerned about speed too much.

BRAZE THE BROKEN ENDS ..IF PARTS ARE GONE MAKE NEW ONES & SAVE YOUR MONEY ...IF YOU DONT BRAZE , A FRIEND MAY , OR EVNE IF YOU PAY , IT SHUD BE MINIMAL ...
BEST WISHES
DOC
fwiw BRONZE BRAZE HAS HIGHER TENSILE STRENGTH THAN CAST IRON ....
