kind of sad

I was looking on the machinery auctions and saw a nice 14ft long "layout table with slots". On closer inspection I saw 2 v ways on the bottom. It is a very large planer table, but permanently mounted to a stand. The rest of the planer likely has long since been melted down for scrap, like so many others. Kind of sad. I can't imagine what this thing weighs! planertable.jpg

Yeah it’s sad but at least they kept the useful stuff. That table is awesome I’d love to have for welding. What’s sad is when you go to the auction and see the place get cleared out for pennies on the dollar. See a bunch of machines nobody bid on and my guess is they’re destined for the scrap yard.

I picked up a do-all 6-13 band saw last week in just those circumstances. 550v 3phase, 1700 lbs, hyd feed table, blade welder, air compressor to blow away chips, 3 speed gearbox plus vari drive. $250. Cost me almost that much to move it. gorgeous saw. Well, assuming that it works of course - remains to be seen. ;). I am the eternal optimist. Also 2 cast iron surface plates for $80. 12" sq and 24" sq. Worth more in scrap value.

I can't phantom the power it took to operate that table. Would make a great bench.

Look at the current prices of cast iron surface plates on eBay, well beyond scrap yard... The old ones have settled down over the years and are easier to scrape in without warping as material is removed. The ones I have seen of modern construction are pretty poor quality. If they are not cracked or otherwise abused, I would buy those two in a minute unless they have problems, and rust is not one of them. Scrap value here is only about $100 a ton, and we deliver at that price...

The last job shop I worked at had one just like that, bout the best weld/setup table I ever used. We also had a planer that size that had a custom made hydraulic milling head on it, one versatile beast of a machine....

I bet it 3,000 lbs or close to it. Be real nice to set up production run on it. Or just a layout table . At least it was saved , we waste so much that could be used. Just ride around on a trash bulk pick up day.

The total heartbreak is having no room or way to move something like that. I see huge mills and lathes for cheaper than hobby size stuff quite often.

I walk my dog every morning and on those special trash pickup days it's all I can do to not turn around and run home to get my pickup! Folks have started putting the good stuff out a day or two before. Always a treadmill or two. Got an aluminum heavy duty bal bearing double slide unit. You just never know what you'll see. Last time I saw 2 appliance style dollies before I even got off the block and one looked new!

Not quite as big, a friend had this T-slot table, he thinks it might have been on a machine tool as a base, Guessing it weighs about 1500 pounds. 5 Feet long, raised it up on 14 x14 hemlock timbers I cut. Great for straightening stuff or fixturing for welding.
