I have one of those "no name" keyless chucks with a JT33 taper that keeps popping out of my drill press. I took a sharpy and "painted" the taper to see if it's making good contact. Turns out, the chuck is only contacting the bottom of the taper. I checked it on a JT33 arbor from my lathe...same thing. And finally, I checked the drill press taper again with a cheapo Grizzly chuck I had laying around and it made excellent contact. Therefore, I'm forced to conclude the taper in the keyless chuck was machined improperly. I guess I could "lap it in," but I don't really want to change the taper of my DP. Any other ideas?
At this point, I'm thinking of buying a MT-3 to JT33 arbor and lapping the chuck to that arbor. This way, I can at least salvage the chuck for dedicated lathe use.
