Just bought my first mill, it's a combo vert/horiz (Sharp VH3). Any tips, tricks, or advice for this machine?

Hey All,

I finally pulled the trigger on a mill. It's pretty unique as far as I can tell because there isn't a ton of info about them on the forums. It's basically a Taiwanese clone if the Shizuoka VHR-G combo mill.

Here is the ad: Sharp VH3

I just did the virtual handshake. The machine is fully functional, but has some minor issues:

- x-axis of the dro not reading (may just be a cable issue)
- slide covers that keep chips out of the y-axis saddle are broken
- finicky getting into some of the horizontal speeds, but they all work
- the rapid traverse lever doesn't engage, it almost does then starts to grind.

All seem fixable, and it really helps that Sharp still sells these machines new and makes parts for them. All the normal speeds and feeds work and it has a ton of cool features not typically on a traditional knee mill. They are also throwing in some NT40 and NT50 tooling.

Has anyone used one of these in the past and have any tips or tricks they care to share? There isn't a Shizuoka or Sharp subforum, so I want sure where to post.

The seller is a form making shop and they seemed pretty desperate to make space for newer, bigger machines. I talked the shop down in price and then they threw in a bridgeport mill with a CNC conversion, has all the servos, but the control box isn't functioning, for $500. Not sure if I'm going try to make the cnc work or just return it to manual.

So excited!

Damn that's a big boy! You in Phoenix or having that thing shipped?

DRO's are cheap even if the scales are gonezo.
Sounds like you may need to make a few gears for the rapids but that'll be a fun project!

Rad on the Bridgeport also!!

I got to go over the machine with the operator that ran it and he said he got the x axis dro working for a bit and then it stopped again. So I think it is just a bad cable going to the scale which should be a super easy fix.

I'm down in Tucson, so not too far for the riggers. All the issues with it seem very manageable and a good way to introduce myself to the inner workings of the machine.

Awesome I was born and raised in Tucson.. bear down! In Utah now but moving back to Phoenix’ish in 2024

I have to wonder what "FAIR" condition means?
We shall see. There was nothing obvious with the spindles running and moving the table. All seemed tight and free moving, no obvious leaks. This sn was built in 1985. The placards show it was originally owned by WL Gore which was a company that developed fluoropolymers with a big office here in Phoenix. Then these guys said they mainly used it to deck the the plates they make their forms out of on the CNC. They said it was too small for them and they're upgrading to something bigger...
