A local is selling a Jet GHB-1340 lathe. It seems like a decent machine but I am looking for any opinions or gotchas with this machine. Asking price is $2750. Also, what is the main difference between a GHB-1340 and GHB-1340A?

Looks used but serviceable. Assume it's under power and you can test it out, are you confident on evaluating it, if not see if you can take someone with you who is.

Don't know what the "A" is for, maybe Jet can help?

The A series has an enclosed gear box.
I have owned one for about 15 years now.
That price seems very good to me if it's in good condition.

Those black items on the right side of the pic are the lifting brackets. One on the top and bottom and the threaded rod goes through them and the lifting eye is there also.
Many of the parts will interchange with some of the grizzly lathes.

I purchased this model and have used it since new and have overall been very happy with it. This "non-A" model was also sold by Grizzly.
(Does anyone know the Grizzly model number?)
I've got a QCTP similar to the one pictured on mine. It came with a turret tool post.

Parts have become non-existant. You won't even find this model on the Jet parts website. Mine has recently developed an oil leak on the shaft driving the lead screw gear box. This shaft is in the headstock and is labeled "E" on the parts diagram for the GHB-1340a. The seal is not the same and I can't find a seal that will work. I think I'm going to have to make a new bearing housing with a standard sized seal.

I've learned not to take really heavy cuts. The compound slide isn't as robust as I'd like, but is adequate. I usually do small light work anyway. So it depends on your intended use.

I wouldn't be afraid of this model if it meets your needs.

Best of Luck,
Tom

Does it come with a steady rest and follow rest?

I assume just what's shown in the photos.
Tom I have been watching your search, And I will say you are very patient, But This lathe is the best one you have shown so far and the best price, It's obvious the economy is slowing and all that funny money that was flying around during covid has come to a screeching halt because this lathe you posted would have been gone in a half an hour last year.

This lathe is the same lathe as many other lathe brands and they are actually quite good lathes. Forum Member Firestopper I believe has this same lathe, It may be branded Birmingham, But they are identical, Anyway, He has made some beautiful projects with his machine. This machine you are looking at is actually pretty clean for a 20 year old machine and doesn't look real used. Lathes with a lot of use usually have a large circular area behind the chuck that has all of the paint missing from swarf flying around the chuck at various times of it's life.

I doubt this lathe will be here for a few more days. Here are some of the same machines with different badges. And there are several other ones I can't think of right now.

Also I would be willing to bet the steady and the follower are in the cabinets on the machine, It wouldn't hurt to ask and they aren't that hard to find for this series of machines you see them on Ebay from time to time, Parts however are dried up and you might have to get parts from a parts machine if something were to break. Electrical stuff can be sourced and some of the gears etc. But As long as you take care of it, It should last you quite a while.

Also that lifting device that comes with it is worth it's weight in Gold, I have used one before, The lifting gadget is an optional Jet item, The other lathes I posted were not supplied with one or were they available to the purchaser.

The lifter came with a small piece of 3/8 plywood the same size as the top plate with a hole through the center to place on the ways before you put the plate and the lifting eye on, I would make one before you move it so the ways don't get scratched.
