I am looking at a Hardinge Bridgeport Series 1 machine. The serial number is HDNG 3XXX on the knee. On the head it has an HJ number. I know Hardinge bought B'port and initially made them in the US. I believe they later moved production to Taiwan. As far as I can tell, this machine is older than 2010. Does any one know about these Hardinge machines and quality? Is there a reliable way to tell the country of origin?

I don't know about figuring out the country of origin, but back when Hardinge was making them in the US there was a teardown of one on another site that found a number of quality issues. The only one I specifically remember being that some of the oil channels were incomplete - just dead-headed, preventing lubrication in some spots.

Dave has one down in his shop at the moment . I haven't seen it in person but it sounds loud on his video . Nice EZ Trac though .

That one looks to be older with a BR number. Probably US made at that time.

Apparently now Clausing makes them. New as of July 2024
I hope they're better than their Kondia mills of the past . They were poor quality , or just less than one would expect with the Clausing name attached .
