If you're buying a new motor, don't spend the extra dollars beyond 1/2. Mine is running well on 1/3 hp. I see no reason to have more.

it has a 1/2 now...actually came with a 1/2 orignial clausing. didnt know if i would get more cutting torque

It's a '53 Studebaker Commander coupe. The presence of the B piller separates it from the hardtop. I've had it since January 1959.

Short answer to the original question is "NO!". You will only get more breaking torque. The 1/2 HP motor is dangerous enough.

it came with a dead factory 1/2 hp. i just replaces with another of the same rpm
