Surfing around YouTube and spent time marveling at this truck assembly plant

Cabin fever is getting to me big time.

I put some boilers in the Volvo truck plant in Curitiba, Brazil, they assembled medium duty trucks from parts send by Volvo, these trucks were used all over Mexico, Central and South America. An amazing operation.

All in all, a good video. But no real difference from an auto production line, only bigger.

What we really have to respect is not the builders, but rather the line mechanics that make repairs and changes once every thing is completely assembled. Without the jigs, and fixtures, and robots , and hoists and the plethora of other devices. One man knowing all he needs to know(most times) to repair anything on the truck. And do it as fast as he can.

I've never done this work, but did have an uncle doing it, for a lifetime. On many differen't models. Not near enough time to learn even a portion, but enough to "git by" usually being the case.

.

I worked in a factory once and the guys who did production tool design and PLC programming were amazing. Not to take away from anyone else but without the engineers and technicians who kept the plant running there would have been nothing built. Many also were very competent machinists too

Agreed, I delivered to the Chrysler assembly plant in Newark De, for almost a year. I got to see most of the operations, from many angles. Watched many times when the line hiccuped, and the technicans came and had to assess, and repair the issue, with all the top management watching. I have no doubt they knew more about the workings of the line, then the engineers that designed it. Would be A great job, but I do not know how one would start out. You cannot see how many sections work, unless the section is locked out, which means at least that portion of the line is shut down. I do not know how many times they were called upon for the average shift, but I bet most times were under pressure to get things fixed fast.
