Anyone watch Mythbusters? Here's an interesting little interview with Adam Savage in his shop where he talks about his lathe, lathe ops, and DRO's.
 
Adam Savage is a half ass craftsman. I saw him trying to turn a 2 liter FULL pepsi bottle on the lathe. It blew up,dousing the lathe with pepsi. I doubt the carbonated water did any good at all,or that they ever got rid of the sugar all oner the lathe. He would not be allowed near my machines.

He did not use proper names. A "tool lathe" should be "tool room lathe". Other such popped up. I could not watch the whole video.
 
Sure sounded like he called it a 'tool room lathe' @ 1:50 into the video to me...

As for some of the things they do (or attempt) being a tad questionable from time to time... that I won't argue ;)
 
Maybe I heard him wrong,but from what I've seen done on that show by him,he can STILL leave my machines alone!!:)

Dont forget... Im sure some of the stuff he ends up doing is FOR THE CAMERA!

Not sayin I'de let him lose in my shop (hes got more/better me anyway) but give him a little cred for having landed a job where he gets to use the his toys and get paid doin fun stuff!
 
I wouldn't let him in my shop either. Yes, he has a cool job, but so do I. I don't get to blow things up, at least on purpose, but I do get paid to design and build some pretty cool stuff. George has it right, Adam Savage is definitely a hack.

Adam Savage may be a hack machinist, but he's a world-class model maker.

Check out the space ship models he made for Star Wars before you write him off.

Absolutely...Model making requires that you have skills in many disciplines.

Personally i like the way he and his cohorts get things done. They come up with a plan of attack, and they do it. So, he might not be the ace machinist many of you are, neither am I. Sometimes absolute precision just isn't required, yet many machinists insist on making things perfect regardless of cost, which drives me nuts. Having been a production manager for a large part of my career, reality dictates that things should be done in a timely and efficient manner. Some people are producers and some are perfectionists, I'll take a producer anyday. Getter done! :biggrin:
