As the title says... I am mainly wondering if cva English chucks are of any quality. Particularly ones with 2 piece jaws.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there Thoro,

CVA lathes are really top notch, I would not hesitate to use any CVA made equipment.

CVA lathes were top quality English copies of the Monarch 10EE lathes. Google Tony Griffiths Engineering and find CVA on his very long list of lathes and milling machines. I have read them ALL.

Thanks for the info guys. Here is a photo of the chuck. It seems to be very well made indeed. It operated very smoothly, nonetheless, I went ahead and tore it apart to clean and relube. It appears to have been used on a machine that ran coolant. The guts were clean, with no swarf, grease a bit dried. Need to make a new back plate for it. Does anyone know of a cheap source for backplates....even such as reclaimed or recycled material, like rotors from a car? I need it to be 2 1/4" x 8 for a south bend heavy 10.

Ok, so, for the debate on chuck lube. What I went ahead and did was greased the pinions on the back side, as the chuck fits together so tightly, I didn't see how chips could easily migrate into the back side of the scroll where the pinion is. Oiled the scroll, put back together. Does this not seem logical? I know this may open up the great debate, but hey, why not?!
