Was wondering , can a indexer be used in a lathe to cut gears by using a arbor and cutter or is a milling fixture better and how do you determine the size of the indexer or milling attachment to fit your lathe. any info greatly appreciated:biggrin:

here is a site users.picknowl.com.au/~gloaming_agnet/cq9325rev7.html i was thinking about trying to do, i got one gear on my lathe that is located on the banjo that is missing 1 tooth and i want to try and make a new one in the near future. i can order the blade to cut the gear and prob make the arbor myself, what i was going to do is use the old gear as a pattern to make a template to use as the indexer wheel it will be mounted on top of the shaft that holds the blank gear for cutting, and by halfing up the gap between teeth and marking the half way point that gives me a line to line my cutter up with.:phew:

What lathe do you have. it might just be cheaper and easer just to buy a gear off ebay.

A shaper comes in handy there too. Build it up and recut it.

my gears are pretty small it looks like it was fixed before at one time or the casting had some debree in it when the gear was made:(
