Okay I have a Craftsman/Atlas 10107301. I am the 3rd generation owner what size Chucks fit, I have a 5 1/4" back plate so I am guessing any economical 5" will fit if I can find the right hole pattern

Thanks for any suggestions

Nobody is going to 'snort'. Or laugh, or chuckle. Your questions are valid and important to the proper operation of your lathe.

Not being intimately familiar with the Craftsman line of metal lathes, I cannot answer your question, but there are many here who can. Be patient and the correct answer will present itself for you.

By the way, welcome aboard!

I have a six inch Craftsman Atlas and run either a 3" or 4" 3 jaw chuck on it. A 5" chuck is getting kind of big. Although the jaws will accept larger work, you will find that yoou are limited by the jaws extending past the chuck body. The 5" chuck on my 602 will only accept 1.25" stock before exceeding the 6" swing of your Atlas. The 4" chuck can run 1.5" stock.

Regarding the hole pattern, don't worry about matching it. The procedure for fitting a chuck is to turn and face the back plate to fit the chuck and then drill the mounting holes to suit. If your holes don't match, simply rotate the pattern 60º and drill new holes.

On a 6" lathe I think about the largest chuck you will swing over the bed will be a 4-4.5 inch OD chuck. As others have pointed out the larger OD of chuck you use, the less distance you will have to open the jaws to hold material and still have clearance for the chuck to clear the lathe bed.

I know that this is for a larger Craftsman lathe, but I have a 6" Craftsman 4 jaw chuck that is surplus to my needs, it has a 5 3/4" recess in the back and has 4 holes for bolts on a 5 1/4" bolt circle, It is in good condition and came on a 10" Monarch lathe that I have with a different spindle thread; it presently has no backplate. Anybody interested?

Greetings, i believe you have a 12" lathe and they would use a 5" or 6" Chuck.

I stand corrected, in that case nothing bigger than a 4" chuck.

Yes, it's a 6 inch swing lathe. I have one. 4 inch chuck is max..
