How to Machine Delrin?

Use whatever kind of tool you would for aluminum. Be careful of long chips though, they tend to wrap. Finish is real nice on this stuff.

Paul,

Delrin or any acetal is the best machining stuff ever. It loves to be climb milled for the best finish although it's tough to get a bad finish on Delrin. The only downside is that it tends to warp so you need to keep that in mind when machining. Be sure you machine both sides to keep the stresses balanced and if you have a lot of pocketing to do and need it flat, rough it out and let it set overnight before finishing. If you look at the edge of a piece of white Delrin plate you can see a mark in the center of it. Try to keep that mark centered on the part as you machine and it will help keep the part more stable.

it cuts pretty easy... and be careful with the stringers/shavings stuff can cut you open real quick.

Thanks for all the help and replies. I prolly won't give it a shot till Monday. Spending time with the Family after Church Sunday.

And I hope you all have a safe and Happy Easter.

Delrin?

Hi Paul although I have heard of Delrin, its not on anybodys shelf around here. However upon a little
house cleaning I came upon a box of one inch by ten of this stuff Friday, must be from my father. This
seems to be ridged and strong, I think I will make another thread stop out of it. Stuck it in my shaper,
all I can say Its wicked, its criminal. Looks like glass what a cut you can make. It seems very forgiving
but your going to need a shop vac. the swarf sticks to dust pans brushes needs shop vac. sam

If you can't find Delrin locally, try searching for Acetal. Basically the same stuff, Delrin is the name brand.

According to what the part is and the cutouts in it are it can easily distort in your vice and/or be flung out. We run tons of this stuff at work (from where I am laid off currently) and have had issues with the parts being pulled out of the fixture on the Mori Siki (sp) (operator error may be partly to blame) but as stated they have an incredible finish. Sometimes on parts like we run it is difficult to hold the tolerances (again operator error can contribute to this).

I got a 2 1/4" X 12"ff ebay last week, Going to make a holder for the web cam to use in the mill.

Got Honey Do's to do this week so I'll maybe get it done next week. And I do have a shop vac hanging on the wall.

Got to take up the carpet in the bed room and put down Vinyl Planks, We did the front room a few weeks ago. I really like that stuff goes down easy and its easy for SWMBO to take care of.

I've just been machining some Delrin (Acetal) bar and found a simple way of preventing the offcut material wrapping itself round the workpiece.

Just place/hold a lollipop stick or similar piece of thin wood against the material (immediately above the tool) and it serves as a very effective deflector.
