How tight should variable speed drive belts be?

I’m trying to figure out how tight these variable speed drive belts should be. Haven’t been able to find much info.

These are both brand new belts, pulleys are smooth and shiny.

If I loose them, they squeal, but if I tighten them up, seems like too much drag. They seem to get really really hot.

Now, I’ve got them about the same as a automotive V belt, not sure If these should be on the tight or loose side.

Is this for a tool room lathe? Harding copy?

It says 3/4 deflection by hand per belt

I wish it was a Hardinge, no it’s just a Clausing 5428.

Thanks, 3/4 is about where it is now. Oddly enough, I couldn’t seem to find any info on Gates or the other belt suppliers.
