How maintain PM25MV Spindle?

I have enjoyed my PM25MV for the past three plus years. Alas, the spindle has started to make some terrible grinding noises.

In
on page 18 it says
The spindle runs on grease-lubricated tapered roller bearings. These should be serviced every 500 hours of running time. Thoroughly clean each bearing assembly then repack...

I don't think I'm even half way to 500 hours, but no matter. I need to service the bearings.

Unfortunately, I don't know a thing about maintaining machinery. This is my chance to learn. But, I don't even know how to even start taking the spindle apart.

Referencing page 20, Part 51 just unscrews. Easy.

But part 50, that spring retainer clip, well, I have no idea how to remove. It can slide about 1mm. But what tool is used to do what to it to remove? And then, deeper in still, what is the sequence of tools and steps I need to take apart and service the bearings? (Given how they sound I'm thinking once I am in there I really should replace them.)

Any suggestions or videos for what gets grabbed/twisted/pried/pressed/pulled by what tool in what sequence? I'm happy to pick up new tools if such is needed.

Thanks for pointers for this machine tool neophyte.

Hi Bill, I'm thinking the best way probably involves a proper press, however you might be able to make a puller using threaded rod, nuts and a few pieces of pipe or tubing. You might want to give a call to PM and see what they recommend

Take a look at my G0704 CNC conversion thread. The very first thing I did was tear down the spindle, add new bearings, and a few modifications which won't apply to you.

Another guy on HM has those spindle disassembly tools I made. If he is done with them, maybe he can pass them to you and you can send them back to me when you are done.

Otherwise they are not hard to make. Plan for $150 for all 4 bearings in the spindle, although you might only need the 2 taper roller bearings.

I forgot to mention, I don't have a hydraulic or arbor press so I used my 12x36 lathe as a press. It worked very well, but I'd consider it light abuse of the machine.
