How is the vertical side of this table used?

radial.JPGThe pic is of a radial drill but the same style table is often seen on shapers as well.
I'm just curious as to the use for the side of the table.
It's obviously slotted to secure a workpiece or maybe a vise, but what type of workpiece or machining operation would be performed on something mounted so far from the axis of the drill head or shaper block?

I've been able to find many pics of work mounted to the horizontal part of such a table, but none of anything mounted to the vertical side.

Any help?

Large pieces and odd shaped pieces are mounted on the side to get the clearance needed to drill or shape the part. I'll see what I can find to help here.

I've clamped lots of shafts on end against the side of a radial drill table to drill retainer bolt holes, rotary encoder mounting, and lube holes, some about 1 1/2 feet deep.

Think about drilling a hole or tapping a hole in a plate say 12" x 12" that is 2" thick and needing this hole on the edge. The one we have at work gets used on the vertical side way more than anything due to the nature of our work.

Don't forget that the arm pivots on the column to swing around and work in quite a large envelope. Many radial drills are used with fixtures that mount to the side of that block, called a "knee". I have one if anyone needs it. I don't.
