The threads on the end of my compound shaft for my South Bend Heavy 10 are a bit of a mess. How would you repair them? Some of my thoughts are to braze or weld it up, turn it down and re-thread. I believe the thread size is 1/4 20 but not sure. The rest of the shaft seems to be in good shape. I am open to suggestions.

All thread wont cost much in 1/4 20, or get crazy and get a ball screw and replace it.
I would not waste my time repairing a 1/4 20 shaft;)

To confirm - this thread is for the funny little nut that holds the crank handle on?

I just finished my 10L, and the funny little nut was missing and the threads were dinged, so I had to do some repairs also.

First, the threads were originally 12-24 (another one of SBs odd threads) someone could have changed them on yours to 1/4, but verify it before you commit. I was able to clean up the threads with a die on mine, but I wouldnt have hesitated to braze them up and re-thread.

I didnt like those odd little nuts that needed a special notched screw driver to remove, so with one of mine missing, I decided to just make 2 new ones in a better design - with a 3/8" hex head. While I was at it, I made new ball cranks handles and mic dials, mine were rusted/pitted.

Would cutting off the threaded stub and drilling and tapping the end of the shaft so you can use a small bolt to retain the crank handle be an option?
