I'm trying to cut 10tpi thead but i can't seem to get it to cut a course thread... No matter what i do or change move the gears around via the atlas 618 manual it's always cutting 20tpi

I have a Craftsman 101.07301 (early 1950s?) but it has a somewhat different threading chart inside the change gear cover from the one you show. It lists different gears than does yours to create a 10 TPI thread. You might try this combination. I've not cut 10 TPI threads, but have used this chart successfully for 8 TPI and 16 TPI threads.

My other thought is to get the Craftsman-specific version of the threading section of the Manual of Lathe Operation (MOLO) on the chance that there are differences between the Atlas & Craftsman models, or that you have a threading chart from a different lathe. You can download this from VIntageMachinery.org:
MOLO 24th Edition Craftsman version of Atlas manual - see "thread Cutting on 6" Lathe" (PDF p. 178)

Good luck!

The setup for 10TPI is outlined in RED in the chart below. The gear arrangement is shown in Figure 1.

Position A: 64T gear at the back and a steel spacer at the front.
Position B: No gears at all.
Position C: 32T gear at the back and 64T gear at the front.
Lead Screw: 40T gear at the front.

Here is another way to look at it:

The gears at the back are labeled in red, and the gears in front in blue.

Is this the way that they are on your lathe?

The Back and Front designations always throw me.
It should work if you follow the chart closely. Be sure the leadscrew and geartrain works smoothly with as little friction and drag as possible. Ditto for the carriage.
The coarser pitches put more strain on the geartrain since the leadscrew must be "geared up" with respect to the spindle

I'll try it that way, thanks, frankly the Craftsman threading chart sucks

When the cover is open and you are looking at the gear train head on from the left side of the lathe, the gears closest to you are at the front.

Below is a pretty clear gear chart for the Atlas 618, which should work for the Craftsman 101.07301. I have both lathes and the gear train is the same.

I don't remember where I got this chart. It might have been from one of the MOLO files in the Downloads area.

I think the two different 10 tpi setups are the same gears, just installed differently. Same ratio that is

Sorry i haven't had a chance to test the charts I've been busy helping with Halloween decorating.
