How are split dies different from normal dies and how are they used on a lathe to make outside threads ? Any pitfalls to using them on a lathe tailstock?
Split dies are made that way so that you can adjust them - tighter or looser - by turning the setscrew and tightening the die holder screws. This allows a more precise fit on the bolt or shaft you will be using them with.
Generally unsplit dies were/are referred to as rethreading dies. To fix threads. The hex ones were carbon steel. Split dies were always HSS and adjustable for different classes of fit.
