Hi,

I was thinking about making a home made bench sander. Does anyone know if a normal motor could be used to power such a tool. Bench sanders/grinders are mainly 2800rpm like a 2 pole motor. I supose starting torque might be an issue, but I don't think sharpening tools on a say 2hp motor would stop the motor?
Thinking of a size at least 12 inch diameter as I want to sharpen planer blades on there.
I spoke to a guy on the phone at machine mart who said I would need a centrifugal motor (I think) and a normal motor would not be suitable for such a tool. I don't know if this advice was just because he was trying to sell something or a normal motor would not work. I have a few ideas for the design of the tool but not worked out fully as I am unsure at first of the motor to power it.
