JimB,
I do washers in a 3 jaw chuck and it works good, just got to take light cuts. I have done quite a few that way, but your way will work too as long as you use the same O.D. washers in your step collet. Just another way to skin a cat.

I had some volume of that sort of work to do once. I took a bar of sufficient size and bored a hole just large enough to accept the washer OD, and about 25 thicknesses deep. Then I threaded the ID to accept a plug that served to compress the stack of washers. I milled a hex on it to wrench down on the washer stack. They were captive by diameter, and clamped by the plug. Of course the plug has to be bored large enough to clear the bar to enlarge the hole, but it's a little different than boring a solid. There is a tendency to pack chips between the washers, so if much has to be removed, you have to take them out and clean the buildup of chips out. It still beats one at a time if you have many to do.

Only three at this point.

Its also 1/conductivity ..... so stand on your head and go with the flow

I like that!
