Is holding a 5/8" reamer in a collet recommended or advisable? I will be finishing a cylinder made of brass that will be bored using a boring bar. I don't have a big enough chuck to handle 5/8".

A reamer should in all actuality float. It really needs to find the center of the part by itself. Chance of an oversize hole increase with rigidity. If you don't have a floating reamer holder the collet is the better choice for accuracy.

Agreed,the reamer should float. If it is offered into the hole off center,it will ream oversize.
Great!!!!! a FLOATING reamer holder, another item I have to add to my never ending list of tools I need:banghead:

I went looking for the link to the DIY floating reamer holder I had seen in the past and could not find it. I thought it was one of the topics of the Houston Home Metal Shop Club but I could not find the project.
The only DIY floating reamer holder I found was the Hemingway Kit number HK2210 shown on page 13 of their catalog at the link below:
