Hello everyone, I bought a used Sandvik endmill it came with R390 inserts. I thought that I would go ahead and buy replacements to have on hand. HOLY COW at the choices ! The inserts that came with it are numbered 2040R08 I think these are size 11 (.268 ) I understand that the numbers and letters mean different things I just want to know what I need for mild steel , cast iron and alum. Some of the numbers in the catalogs are longer than the numbers on my inserts. Any help at all ? Thanks, Tom

I'm a slow reader, so Ken beat me with that link, but here's another one.
If you're like me, either page will just help confuse you more but I can tell you that if your toolholder currently holds R390, then you know it holds rectangular bits. That's the R. So you can narrow your choices down greatly by eliminating the triangles, diamonds, circles and other lucky charms. Then you can measure your old inserts to match the size. From there it's just a matter of choosing rake/grind angles to suit whatever you're using them for. Some of the longer numbers are because they include data you don't really need to know as a hobbyist, but any good seller should have a little blurb explaining the breakdown of their numbers so you can understand what they give you.
Good Luck
Joe

EDIT: If I say "here's another one" I probably should actually include a link.....

The problem with Sandvik inserts and tool holders, they have assigned their own designations and numbers to many of their products. They are difficult to interchange with other manufactures on some items. And some of their products are exclusive with Sandvik. There is no ISO standard to their madness!

The end mills that Tom has, use inserts that are just a little different so Iscar ADPK1000 or 1600 series inserts will not fit.:bawling:

They also grade the inserts by the new ISO grading system making it much more difficult to figure out which grade to use.:headache:

Here's a link to a page covering the different types of inserts for the R390 and grades for different materials. A lot to digest for the HSM!

Just keep trying inserts until you get one that works!!!

Thanks Guys, I feal that I'm on the right track. I used the endmill yesterday worked great, it seems to like a little more speed than HSS. thanks again, Tom

I'd say to go to sandvik's web site and don't worry about finding your insert. simply find the distributor for your area and call them asking what inserts you need for roughing / finishing each material with your holder.

They charge so much money for the product but they do provide a service. Once you take notes on what is recommended then go back to the site and make sure you agree with the expert before ordering.

This is something IMO we can pretty much expect from the big brands admittedly a resource I haven't used in a few years.
