Need to remove the handle for my compound (leadscrew replacement). Just want to make sure this thing is not threaded on (which would be really wierd I think). Tried tapping off with a dead blow and nothing. Gonna fab up a little bearing puller type thingy. But threads would be a bad day.

Has anyone seen a threaded on handle on a lathe compound?

This is on a late 80's vintage Shen Jey 1740G (very very similar to an Eisen 1640...made by Winho). As is often the case, a lot of the Asian machinery shares a common design. The Winho parts diagram has been accurate on all the other lathe handles. For the compound, it does not show a key and does not show threads. Looks like a morse taper??

Here is an example of the cross slide handle (which does accurately show a key...part #31)

It looks like it could be a taper fit and the factory just drives it on really hard. Pretty sure it's not threaded
Spray some liquid wrench in there before you use your puller thingy and maybe use a little heat also

If there is any set screw there could be another one underneath it I found that out after I had to but a new threaded spindle for my wood lathe. I also think it is a press fit.

That is a press fit and it fits over a key. I use a end wrench that fits over the screw shaft just behind the handle and lever it off against the nut ring with the set screw. After it is loose you can tap it with a soft blow hammer if needed.
