Hello everyone. Home/hobby machinist here just looking to get into the craft.. Ive been on a search for a lathe, and finally decided on what i thought was a good deal… MSC 1136b. It was at a local shop that sells all kinds of used equipment. Guy said it was pretty nice machine and everything looked decent and i believed him. Never saw it under power or messed with it before i bought, but he offered a 30 day warranty so i figured what could possibly go wrong??? I got it home and into place and discovered a tooth on the gear that moves along the rack for carriage travel was bent almost completely into the next. Looks like someone crashed the lathe and it busted the gear tooth. So i called the guy and he said no problem bring it back and we’ll fix it.. 3 weeks later i go to pick it up and he showed it to me working and all seemed well. So i get it home and started giving it a thorough cleaning and found out his “fix” was to just bend the tooth back into line. Im actually surprised this tooth is holding on so well instead of just cracking off.. maybe the gear isnt hardened?? Now im mad because nevermind the possible loss of “precision feeding” but its not if but when it breaks again. So now im looking for a new gear.. I know these asian machines are usually a clone or close replica of something name brannd, but i also hear that there are many slight differences between them all, and i cant seem to find a reference to this machine anywhere. Closest i could find is an msc 1124 but it looks different. Anybody have one, know where i can purchase one, or know someone that can make one inexpensively??? Even if i can find a gear and machine the shaft to make it fit.. see pics for what im talking about. Thanks in advance for your help.

I would say that is a weld up the damaged teeth and recut repair.

One approach would be to buy a spur gear from one of the gear suppliers like Boston or Martin, make a new shaft, and join them together by some method (epoxy, welding, split pin, etc. )

Yes i looked into it but I actually found a few guys on a fb group im in that are willing to make one for ~$150 in their own shop using 4140.. probably gonna go that way.

Looks just like my 12 x 48 Enco. Have you tried grizzly?
