Help a Noobie identify tools

I've just bought a set of HSS (?) lathe tools for my Atlas 10F but I don't know what they are all used for (except cutting metal obviously :)) )

Can anyone help me to identify the specific purposes of each tool

P3300529.JPG I'm pretty certain D is a right handed turning tool and G is a parting tool (?). Therefore M should be a left hand turning tool but what about some of the others?
I know this is basic stuff for most of you out there but I am a rank amateur and any help would be gratefully appreciated:tiphat:

From left to right

Left hand turning, left hand turning, right hand turning, right hand turning, parting tool, boring bar, boring bar, boring bar, round nose (left, right, or plunge), and another right hand turning tool.

The image below gives the nomenclature and a few extra clues.

Good info for me too. Can anyone recommend a good brand of these tools, not made in China but also not costing as much as a compact car?

I don't know many that use forged tools like those anymore. Most people I know of either grind their own from HSS blanks, use brazed carbide, or indexable inserts. It's a big topic. In general, buy quality, and you should be ok. For HSS, any of the high end types are going to serve well (M42 or T15 to name 2).

Are you sure they are even HSS? They could well be just high carbon. When I started my apprenticeship in a shipyard at the end of 1974, we had to grind most of our own tools from high carbon blanks that were made in the shipyard blacksmiths shop. they looked a lot like yours.

[h=2]Re: Help a Noobie identify tools[/h]Hi, the cranked or "bent" tools are to allow access around obstructions such as raised faces or even when very close to the chuck jaws.
