This is a recently acquired machine from a local auction. I was fortunate that my wife casually leaned over and told me about it a few days before it went out. I followed it wanting to bid on a milling machine but they shot past what I could spend right now. The surface grinders moved very little in price. Having never put hands on the machine, I was hesitant to bid too much. Knowing myself well enough, I bid to fight off sleepless nights from not offering at least a few oil changes worth of cash.

That rather low bar was enough to win the auction. I've never operated a surface grinder, mind you. Not even a single pass. So I have a lot to learn.

Here she is just after acquisition. It was only a few miles down the road from me so a very fortunate situation all the way around.

To my very untrained eye, it appears to be in good condition. The shop had a number of nice looking Okamotos w/automation and many bigger machines.

Unknown to me was the machine had been hydraulic at one point. I found out because it dumped a half gallon of hydraulic oil on the floor. (I suppose the knob on the front would've been a good indicator). Here's a pic of the motor in the cabinet.

I wonder if the hydraulics are worth attempting a rebuild? It's completely new to me but so is everything with this machine. I'd be very happy to have any suggestions as I begin the clean-up and inspection process. This will be a 2 steps forward, 1 step back affair as I'd like to dial this thing in as tight as possible but I'd like to use it a little bit before attempting any fixes.

The orginal oil pump is gone, replaced by a hand-pump unit. Not great. It is a rack and pinion drive and I'd like to upgrade to wire eventually since most knowledgeable people say that is the ideal for this machine.

Welcome to H-M.
I can't help you with your project, except for a few comments/suggestions.
If you haven't found THIS GUY already, I suggest you start a dialog with him. His web site explains his credentials. I expect he will be able to provide valuable information, at least.
There are a few threads on H-M that are about Harig grinder refurbishment. Searching for Harig should get you there.
One fellow replaced his bad lube pump with, IIRC, a Little Giant pump. He didn't specify the model of the pump And I didn't ask as I think mine works well enough. Regardless, I recommend you get the continuous lubrication system working again. It keeps the grit continuously washed away from the ways, etc.
The OEM replacement gear type lube pump for my manual 612 costs well over $1000 so commercial pump options become attractive.

Do you have 3 phase power in your shop?

One more recommendation: Go back to your post in the "What Did You Buy Today" thread and edit in a link to this thread. Keep the referb info in one thread.
