Hardinge HLV toolroom lathe - $4000 (Fairfax, CA)

The ad looks a bit suspicious to me. Still, good price for a well respected lathe. BUT, no pics, no list of any accessories or condition, seller wants your phone number and email address. Might be totally legitimate, but I would approach it carefully...

I bought the machine listed in this post in July 2022. The similar ad on craigslist but for south bend lathes and a Bridgeport J head. I spoke to seller and he mentioned that he had a Hardinge HLV-b made in England. asking price was $4000. I drove almost 2 hours to take a look. When I arrived I quickly learned that the HLV was kept uncovered outside for many years. The bed has thick build up of rust and sever pitting. the motor is only able to run 440 volts. none of the knobs turned and I knew not to play with it if I was considering restoring it.
In the process from bill of sale to pickup date I was extorted, lied to, verbally abused, grifted, stolen from and inconvenienced to a point that would not have been worth getting paid $3,000 to take the machine. Good instincts on not dealing with the seller. Also note the seller is a member of this forum (I do not know his handle). He is selling some other machines which were listed on craigslist but are not at the moment. Be on the lookout for South Bend lathe adds. I believe he has a heavy 10 in poor condition as well as a Bridgeport J head and a small south bend painted green that has fake scraping on the ways ( someone did not understand any element of how to hand scrape and did not know it required a reference...ect). So basically someone gouged the ways with some sort of scraper. its obvious to anyone who has ever seen a hand scraped machine. I will put an add on craigslist " BUYER BEWARE- SCAMMER" listing in hopes of helping a unsuspecting buyer steer clear of the nightmare of dealing with the seller.
