This is a hand cut rasp I made, more for shaping wood.
I cut the points by hand on O-1 steel, then heat treated and tempered the steel.
Added a handle of birch.
It cuts as smooth as my Liogier rasps, but not as fast.
I use a 1" w x 1/4" thick by 8" long piece of annealed O-1 steel which I clamp on an anvil so it doesn't move.
Then I peen in diagonal rows, which gives a random tooth pattern: the random pattern is important for a smooth finish when rasping.
Each tooth needs to be the same depth.
I use a piece of s-7 steel ground like in the picture for peening. Tool is about 3/8" square by 6" long. Hss would work also.
Heat treat O-1 blank for 25 minutes in forge, oil quench and temper at 400 F. for 45 minutes( straw color). Add a handle.
That’s really cool. I saw a video long ago about how they were done but kind of forgot about it until now. I guess the process is called “stitching”, and there are a few videos out there now on the technique. Here’s one for anybody interested.
