Exactly what the title says. What does this tool do and what is the advantage of doing the task this specific way? Any takers? Really this is just an excuse to show you a simple to make tools that could be very useful to some.

On-the-machine joiner blade sharpener. Very cool!

Give Jim a gold star!! Absolutely correct. This jig allows you to sharpen planer blades in position on the machine, saving a lot of messing about removing, then re-aligning after a sharpen. The actual tool is not very complex and could easily be machined by anyone with a mill and lathe.

What is interesting about this set-up is that it was made by a Swedish company called Stenbergs who also made a very unique line of combination machines with the thicknesser that had the cutting head below the planer table. The table had a set of rollers and feed rollers in the table that pushed the wood up against a plenum and by adjusting the plenum up or down, you adjusted the thickness of the piece. I have been lucky enough to score the smallest and most modern version of this machine.

What seems like a strange design on it's own when looking at the combination machine, makes sense when you see the sharpening system they also made. This was a very carefully thought out design feature to allow the grinding of the blades in situ to save time for a production shop. This jig would be useful for someone with a combination machine that utilizes the same cutting head and blades for both jointer and thicknesser, saving a great deal of time as the blades can be sharpened 2 - 3 teams before they need to be re-adjusted in the cutting head.
