I bought a new, from Amazon Grizzly H2713 Surface Gauges and it has alot of side to side movement. With all thumb screws tightened you can move the top of the rod about 1/4 of an inch, you can see the fine adjustment and frame for the bottom snug inside the bottom cast iron base moving. Did I get a bad tool? Can you adjust the gauge to remove the side to side movement? Do all surface gauges have side to side movement? Or are Grizzly surface gauges bad in general? I've bought, has not arrived complete, Brown & Sharpe 621 surface gauge, I have never owned a surface gauge and am very new to hobbyist machining, I've spent the last several months slowly buying the tools I need so I have 0 experience so any help would be great, thanks.

The arm should not wobble. It's possible that the pivot screw has loosened a bit. If it's like other surface gauges, the screw head is slotted, located on the side of the base, about halfway along the length and something like 1/4" below the top surface. Try tightening it gently. If that doesn't help, you should probably ask Amazon for a return/refund. In my experience, Grizzly tools are pretty good.

Thanks, I have it packed up ready to ship back, pretty sure I will return it but that depends on what answers I get from this forum. But its brand new, why would it have that much movement when it has never been used?

Durned if I know "why." I'm just trying to help understand the "what."

I recommend that you contact Grizzly support on Monday. I have found them to be helpful. I suspect that you will need a replacement of whole or part of the unit.

Why? because it is an inferior tool; USA and European brands that have served multiple generations of workmen their whole careers are going to be in much better order than their Chinese counterparts when brand new, a friend calls such stuff "stage prop tools".
