This is not a machining question, but I figure people here might have the answer.

What's a good, strong glue for bonding plastic? I have a Bosch dishwasher with an upper panel made from some kind of cheap white plastic that dissolves in acetone. If it dissolves in acetone, it must be possible to glue it effectively, because it will also dissolve into the right glue.

If it dissolves in acetone, I would guess it's PVC. You should use a solvent glue with tetrahydrofuran in it, such as Oatey pipe cement for PVC or better yet the green glue for joining dissimilar plastics (in the plumbing section). It won't be a tidy job, but it will solvent weld the joint tight and be dishwasher safe.

A solvent based glue should do the job. It would help to narrow the type of plastic down. Is there a recycle symbol on the part? A triangle with a number in it? Some plastics as otherwise identified by an acronym; PS for polystyrene, PVC for polyvinyl chloride, etc. Once the plastic has been identified you can determine the best glue.

Polystyrene, acrylic, polycarbonate, ABS, and asorted copolymers all dissolve in acetone.

I decided to slap some J B Weld Plastic Bond on it. In half an hour, I'll know if it worked.

It's disappointing that Bosch would make a handle this weak. I can buy a new panel, but it will still be weak at the sides of the handle.

It worked. Saved me $70. I wish I had applied this stuff before the plastic tore in the first place.

MEK will instantly bond it if pvc
