Hey guys. Just wanted to post my first tool gloat, haha. A friend and I went out and about yesterday and toured some of the local pawn shops (and also ate at this awesome pizza buffet).

Didn't find hardly anything of interest! Of course, I'm a pretty tight penny-pincher as well. But as far as machinist tools, the only thing I found of interest was some 8" Fowler dial calipers for $30. I passed on them, somewhat regret doing so.

But at the last shop we went to, I found something that made the whole day worth it. In a back cabinet, they had some mics, and in a small paper package was a brand-new Fowler X-Test test indicator. After seeing some at my place of employment, I have wanted one of these very badly.

It's similar to an Interapid-type DTI, with a pivoting shank instead of only dovetails and attachable, stationary shanks. It gives you a much larger range that you can use it. They are very nice pieces of kit, and I'd recommend them in a heartbeat to anyone in need of a .0005 DTI.

Asked the guy what he wanted, he said $70. Tried to haggle with him, but he said they had my offer ($50) in it. Of course, he was probably full of it. But, after a little thought, I went for it.

Now, that by itself is a great buy. The thing is literally brand new, absolutely no signs of wear or so much as a smudge on the lens. I got it basically for two thirds-price. But then I looked at the paper pouch in come in.

It had a label on it made out to a person who I had gone to vocational school with. It appears that he got it through the WIA program (gov program that helps voc school students pay for tools), and never used it... he wasn't someone I was particularly fond of and he left pretty quick. But, a tool is a tool.

Just thought that was neat. It was pure chance that I found it. The price was fantastic, and the pouch was icing on the cake.

For reference, here's a link to the same DTI on Enco: http://www.use-enco.com/CGI/INSRIT?PMAKA=890-9980&PMPXNO=5507080&PARTPG=INLMK32

(Note - here's why I like to buy from Enco... the same indicator from darn near everywhere else is about $120-$130.)

Nice find! I have two similar DTIs that I purchased on eBay some years back. The one I use most of the time is a .001" Mitutoyo, and the other is a .0001" Scherr-Tumico. The S-T can be either stud mounted or dovetail mounted, but for some reason the Mitutoyo can only be stud mounted. Neither of them has the pivoting shank that you mentioned, but they are still both very handy to have!

So you like them Fowlers huh? I never used one. Just always worried they would not be worth the cost. Nice to know. I want a Interapid pretty bad. My Starretts ok but that pivot and shanks nice. Teacher used one. He wouldn't loan that one out ahaha. I'd have to find a killer deal though cause my starrett gets it done for now

I'd say they're worth the price, really $100 for a DTI is pretty cheap. I also have a plain Fowler DTI (one with only dovetails) and I have to say, for it being not much less, it has an overall far less "bulky" feel. The X-Test has a solid-feeling metal body to hide the guts, a regular Fowler is really thin sheet metal.

Now of course for hobby work only it may not be needed, but an indicator in the style I've mentioned is quite simply indispensable at my place of employment. Really, unless you have to indicate a round piece over about 3" diameter, one of these can augment an over-the-quill or similar universal holders.

I don't mean to sound like I'm trying to sell a product, guys, sorry! Haha. I'm just a little tool-drunk, I think, I've coveted one of these for a long while.

My starrett only has dove tails. I got it new for 80 bucks when I was in school. It's a .0005 so when I do another it will be a .0001. So you like fowler over all or just this indicator?

Nothing wrong with a Starrett, that's for sure. Fowler as a whole, I dunno. I own a 0-3 set of Fowler mics. They test okay as a whole (at any point within roughly .0002 on gage blocks, which really is not great for a mic, but I digress), and I like them for feel. But this indicator in particular, I really like, especially taking cost into consideration in comparison to a Brown & Sharpe.
