I've done a search. I checked the links provided with the "Is this already being discussed." I'm not seeing my issue (maybe I'm just not understanding!).

Here's my issue: After doing the tramming the head angle and squaring the vertical to the table, my test cuts are never square. On my most recent attempt at getting it setup right the block I used for testing is not square. Cut on Side 1 measurements are: 1.907" and 1.911; Cut on Side 2 measurements are 3.086" and 3.086". Cut on side 1 was cut moving from front to rear. Cut on Side 2 was moving right to left.

What I've done:
  • Using an SST tramming tool with two dial indicators at the 6" holes in the bar (zeroed at the same spot using a parallel on its flat), I have adjusted side to side and front to rear to darn near 0 (the gauges are 0.001" graduations and I've got it adjusted to where the needles are on the same or a hair's breadth off).
  • Using a block of aluminum secured to the table only (not using a vice to check the table itself first), I've cut two sides (as seen from the measurements above).
  • Using a Starett (or however that's spelled) 6" machinist's level, I checked the level of the ways on the base of the mill and the bed. The bed does not match the ways.
  • Using an digital caliper I've measured the height of the bed at both the front and rear. Front measurement is 3.057"; rear measurement is 3.062".
I have been trying to get this situated for about a year now (I get frustrated and stop for awhile, then I come back to it, the frustrated, rinse and repeat...) and nothing I do can ever get it to cut at a 90* angle. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm not an expert but you should post pictures and I'm sure someone here will help.

Can you give us the make and model of your mill. Perhaps someone with a similar mill can help you. It may be some fault or adjustment in the mill.

Really need some pictures to give the best advice- it could be the machine, your technique, your choice of tooling or some combination
Import vises are often not square, for starters

What sort of pictures do you need?

I'm not putting a vise on there until it's square, I'd just have to keep taking it off and adjusting...I really don't want to do that every time.

I was not. I've decided to take it back down to its constituent parts and check each one as I go through to look for issues as I progress.

A question regarding the threaded blocks for the carriages, do these have an particular alignment? For example, should they be flush with the carriage that holds them?

I'll put pictures of what I mean in a follow-up post (I'm typing this on my computer and I'll post the pics from my phone.
