I have a qc 54. I have noticed in pictures that other lathes have pin index handle for the forward reverse gear lever. I just have a lever and have to tighten the nut to hold it in place. I have to guess where neutral is. Not a problem I was just wondering why mine is different.

Yes pics please. I believe some of the original tumbler assembly's used a nut to tighten the assembly down.

There were two models (four if you count the ones that came with a few extra parts to convert a 10D or earlier with 5/8" dia. lead screw). The original QCGB that came out in 1947 was the Model 1500. It had the spring loaded detent pin similar to the ones on the 12" tumblers. Around 1950, Atlas revised the gear box and it became the Model 6800. The 6800 does not have a detent pin on the tumbler lever.
