So... I have built several engines of varying types. I was trying to come up with something different. My friend Ray had built a flat head hit/ miss several years ago. I took my inspiration from his design. My engine has a 1 inch bore and a two inch stroke. The cylinder liner was machined from cast iron. The cylinder head was cut out using my CNC router. The combustion chamber was hollowed out using the CNC router as well. The volume of the combustion chamber ended up being 5 cc. Measured by filling it up with water from a graduated cylinder.

The crankshaft was built from four pieces. It is held together by Loctite as well as a tapered pins. The rod bearing is a ball bearing which I installed while building the crankshaft. The mains are ball bearings. Wrist pin is an oilite bushing. The flywheels were made from barbell weights. On the governor side I Loctited a plug into the big hole that came with the weight. I then bored the plug to fit the 1/2 inch crankshaft. The other weight was attached to the crankshaft using a tapered bushing.

I used an electronic ignition module for spark. A magnet was attached to a small wheel mounted on the crank. This triggered a Hall sensor which was attached to the ignition module.

The biggest headache I encountered was making and seating the valves.

Here it is running.
