Flat 8 or Flat 12 Can Am Racing Engine

hobby machinist's

the new thing is billet crankshafts for stroker engines.

this opens the door for a reasonably priced custom crankshaft.

i'm thinking flat 8 or flat 12 because a flat motor will rev up quicker

because it has no counterweights.

first i thought use chevy small block rods and pistons but

maybe it's better to go small.

this can be built 1/4 or 1/2 scale to sort things out.

have a nice day!

Just keep in mind that the longer it is, the more flex it will tend to have, and hence more bearing journals you will need in the design.

right now it's figuring out whether it'll be single or double throw

rod journals.

there's a condition with one of them where there's a drawback

but i can't remember what it is right now.

then the other decision is air cooled or water cooled.

the crank pins come first it would seem like.

have a nice day!

yes, that locating the crank throws is a requirement.

you're saying put each piston & rod assembly

on it's own journal?

jumping a little, i was wondering how to mill cylinder banks.

this picture of late block helps.

about is far as i've figured it is:

bore the block for the cylinders

'bore' the water jackets around the cylinder bores

then how big a rectangular 'head surface' area determines

how much water jacket there will be.

how much bigger the cylinder block is around the cylinders, so to speak.

leads to how much cooling is enough?

have a nice day!

looking at that LS7 bare block hipped me to something else.

with the going to aluminum blocks they are easier to cut and machine.

yes, i am getting ahead of the project, it's:

crankshaft

crankcase

cylinder blocks

heads

i just thought of something, the cylinder blocks and heads may be the

only components that need cooling.

i don't think the crankcase does, so the engine would just need 1 or 2 crossovers

from side to side between the block and head sets.

have a nice day!

can these new aluminum blocks and heads be welded to?

for example the Ford Modular 4.6 and it's different displacements.

is the aluminum they use good for welding to?

it's dumb to make heads from scratch, that's Offenhauser territory.

the deal is to see if any blocks are good choices for cutting the

cylinder banks off.

i did think of the crankcase can do without cooling passages but

it needs oil passages and probably an oil pump.

have a nice day!
