Hello all,
Recently refurbished a 1944 Craftsman Atlas 12 in lathe and am starting to practice and turn some book knowledge into practical experience.
Last year I built a small machinist hammer with my mini lathe but was never happy with the quality so it got redesigned and remade.
Pretty happy with the outcome.
I practiced lots of techniques (some as firsts) so a useful process. 3 & 4 jaw use, steady rest, simple turning, knurling facing, turn to a shoulder, taper turning, center drill, pilot drill, size drilling to depth, tapping, die threading, steel, brass, plastic use.
Design evolved a bit to accommodate recovery after breaking a drill off but all in all came out well as you can see.
High likelihood I'll make another one with a bit better proportions in the future but this will come in handy in the shop in the meantime.
Best regards, Karl
