Well, I've been putting off painting long enough. I've got some free time so I'm going to try to finish my restore/rebuild. I decided to use plain old battleship gray. Here are some quick photos.

Hi Scott,
Nothing wrong with good honest gray. Looks like a good finish - brush or spray?

As far as I've been able to determine, all of the Atlas machines have always been a shade of machinery gray, except possibly some sold to the War Department during WW-II that were OD.. I'm not so certain about the color of some of those sold in England under other names such as Acorn. Some of them might have been a bright green.

Not that it matters, but "battleship gray" is a figment of some Hollywood type's imagination. In the real Navy, it is called Haze Gray. As in haze gray and under way

Anyway, the gray gear cover looks much better than that blue thing. :)

I've never had great luck getting a good spray finish so I decided to brush paint. I'm using an artists brush. It's about .500 wide. So far I've been happy so far with the results.

I just lump all those shades of gray into a generic battleship gray description. I've just always heard machine gray called battleship gray. I'm using Rustoleum Smoke Gray. It's a good safe color for machinery. Someone here posted photos of their lathe which they painted chevy orange. Doesn't sound very nice until you see it. The photos were really nice.
