So this is my first machine , I’ve been researching mills for a few years now but this one popped up and I couldn’t pass it up... but for the life of me I can’t identify this mill. And a big part is the home shop bits on this and if not for the table and casting I would say this mill looked completely home built however I am fairly sure it’s a Frankenstein essentially part of some other proper mill sized down for bench top size. The previous owner said he believes it takes 2c collets of which I have 3 however measureing them (rudimentarily) they appear to be closer to 4c -5c I cant currently measure the threads however I can post pics and hopefully you guys can help me with this lemme know if there’s any questions
Full disclosure I know the pictures are rough I took them in the back of my rav 4 in the dark if you need to see anything more clearly just let me know and I know the mill is rough but I think it had good bones and I’m quite sure for the price it will serve me well until I can grow out of it

That looks almost like a Jig Borer. Made for making precise holes in precise locations.

Any particular make or model based on the head and “neck” castings ? And I had come across the possibility of it being a jig borer but I’m not sure what really defines them as opposed to a milking machine ? Can one be used for hobby milking ? Are there drawbacks

And my biggest question as far as ID how would I tell if it’s a mill or a jig borer ? I would assume from what I’ve read it would potentially come down to ways on the table and the spindle , as one picture shows the ways are dovetailed so that’s a positive but as for anything else I have no clue

Looks like a great hobby milking machine to me, goats or cows????

Seriously though, no idea on the maker, once you get it cleaned up if nobody here knows try over at OWWM. Dr. Frankenmill was definitely being creative this time ;)

Just for grins tell us what it set you back?

Cheers,

John

I saw a jig borer a while back that looked very similar to that one from the table up. It had another 3 feet or so of column below the table, kind of like a drill press on steroids. Was from around 1900 or so. Was only $200 but no way to move it.

that's pretty wild! Looks like the head off a jig borer welded to a piece of railway track with the table from something else welded to some C-channel. Be cool to see it up and running!

I paid about $150 , it is definitely wild looking the guy who I bought it from is obviously a skilled home shop fabricator. It does look like I beam and some very old school fabrication.. and I’m super excited tbh it has a newer motor and seems to run quite smoothly , my biggest issue is all that large wheel and belt work behind the head if I could simplify that to like v belt and cone pulleys it would be great but if not it runs as is and the guy talked about making parts all the way through steel.

my Biggest questions moving foreword is identifying my options for tooling

Lmao , my phone has been autocorrecting to milking so I suppose Now I’m stuck trying to work dairy Products in the shop perhaps a block of New York sharp cheddar ? How many flutes on an end mill do I need for that :p
